Of the art forms, ballet is the one that combines all of them into one. Music is danced to, art is seen in sets and costumes, literature is used to set the story, and the most obvious: dance. It is with dance that an observer can become most stimulated, most intrigued and most amazed. The audience experiences emotion through all the art forms, relates to the characters or collides with them, and comes away with a story in their minds and a certain feeling in their hearts. There is a particular ballet that has done all these things and more since its first performance: Petrushka. A story of refused love, imprisonment, and chases, it captivates an audience, and stimulates the eyes and ears. In addition, people find that they may relate to at least one of the characters, which amazes them all the more because after all, they are only puppets.
This ballet has been enchanting audiences since 1911, and it is no wonder. But perhaps the most dynamic performance was the first, for it is through the rehearsals, composing and piecing together of Petrushka that a masterpiece was created, and has lived on since. Changes have been made, and the original score was even revised in 1947; but the story of Petrushka, combined with the elements of music, dance and art, have created a legend for the Ballets Russes. With the talents of Diaghilev, Stravinsky, Benois, and Fokine, all the elements of this ballet can be seen as separate art forms, yet they are all very connected.
